DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
Economics is the systematic study of human behavior in the production, consumption and exchange of goods and services. It helps us to answer such questions as : How much of his or her income an individual chooses to save and what goods he or she chooses to buy; how a firm sets its prices, and how many people it chooses to employ how all individuals and firms in the country interact to determine national output, balance of payments, inflation, unemployment; should we raise taxes on fuel to reduce pollution;how we could use fiscal and monetary policies to solve economic problems. The study of economics develops a mental approach for analysing such questions and for understanding why the issues that they raise are extremely complex. The undergraduate curriculum covers contemporary developments in economics both in theory and in practice.
A first degree in economics not only prepare students for a career as an economist in private or public sector, but will also be excellent preparation for a range of related careers such as accountancy, banking, academia and managerial jobs in general. The first year of the degree course aims to develop a set of skills in computing and to give essential foundation in the subject. It is possible to specialize completely in economics from the second year onwards and additional modules in economics are available as options from the third year.
